Volunteers consumed dry fi sh (two meals/week), oily fi sh (two meals/week) or fi sh oil for eight weeks. The study is being prepared for publication. Before the end of 2018, results from three large RCTs will be reported. These include "Vitamin D and Omega-3 Trial (VITAL), Reduction of Cardiovascular Events with Icosapent Ethyl - Intervention Trial (REDUCE- IT)" and "A Study of Cardiovascular Events in Diabetes (ASCEND)." Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) omega-3s found in fl axseed, along with lignans and soluble fi ber, have been shown to help reduce cholesterol levels. 19 Flaxseed also provides blood glucose 20 and blood pressure-lowering 21 effects. In a year-long study published in 2016, fl axseed (from Pizzey Ingredients) reduced brachial systolic and diastolic blood pressure in patients with peripheral artery disease. Data support several specifi c oxylipins as potential mediators in the antihypertensive properties of fl axseed. 22 The Basics: Vitamins & Minerals Magnesium has been shown to provide myriad therapeutic benefi ts, with cardiovascular health being among the most important, explained Michael Chernyak, president, CK Nutraceuticals. According to Stephen Ashmead, senior fellow for Balchem Corp., Albion Minerals, indicators of a low-magnesium state may include cardiac arrhythmias and low blood pressure. 23 Further, research implicated magnesium defi ciency in diabetes mellitus, hypertension, cardiac arrythmias, acute myocardial infarction and atherosclerosis. 24 Copper is another mineral indicated for heart health. A recent review noted one major effect of copper defi ciency is perturbation of normal lipid metabolism, resulting in altered lipid profi les. 25 These altered lipid profi les can be predictive biomarkers of cardiovascular risk, as well as type 2 diabetes. Zinc defi ciency has been shown to increase the generation of several infl ammatory cytokine proteins. Impaired zinc homeostasis and chronic infl ammation are prominent in several cardiac diseases and related diseases. 26 Minerals offer unique considerations for formulators and consumers related to absorption. Chernyak stressed the need for the availability of the right type and form of nutrient to give consumers the most benefi t. CK Ingredients' Deep Ocean Minerals™ concentrate features more than 70 naturally occurring synergistic minerals and trace elements in ionic form, which "uniquely mimics the body's natural mineral composition." Along those same lines, Albion Minerals secured multiple patents specifi cally related to mineral chelation. This process binds inorganic minerals to organic ligands, creating easily absorbable, well-tolerated, organic mineral chelates used in mineral supplements and food fortifi cation.
