20 INSIDER November/December 2018 Vitamin K2 has been shown to reverse arterial stiffness, a byproduct of coronary artery calcifi cation (CAC). NattoPharma's cardiovascular study of healthy postmenopausal women showed taking 180 mcg of MenaQ7 ® K2 as MK-7 daily for three years decreased arterial stiffness due to calcifi cation. 27 In the past, vitamin E studies showed mixed results in terms of its ability to deliver heart health benefi ts. But newer studies hint that with some patients and at certain doses, vitamin E can be benefi cial. A 2016 study found a signifi cant decrease in blood pressure (systolic) and malondialdehyde (MDA) in patients administered 400 IU vitamin E in the form of alpha-tocopherol for eight weeks. 28 In addition to tocopherols, vitamin E is available in the form of tocotrienols. Tocotrienols sourced from palm oil (EVNol SupraBio™, from ExcelVite) were shown to have improved arterial compliance in healthy adults after two months of oral supplementation, thus lowering the risk of CVD. 29 Further, in 2007, researchers found SupraBio brought about a statistically-signifi cant decline in total and LDL-cholesterol levels. 30 In another clinical trial, soft gels manufactured by Soft Gel Technologies Inc. exhibited enhanced bioavailability of the key active ingredients in Sytrinol ® , a patented combination of citrus extracts and Malaysian red palm oil that contain polymethoxylated fl avones and tocotrienols. 31 Sytrinol was further shown to lower total cholesterol by 20 percent in several other clinical trials—LDL cholesterol by 22 percent and triglycerides by 28 percent.
