2 INSIDER March/April 2019 Viewpoint Trending CPG Developments I'm just back from my 10th Natural Products Expo West, but tracking the trends and tasting the new products never gets old. In those 10 years, I've seen the fad of raspberry ketones, the growth of probiotics and the birth of krill (at least as a supplement). This year, some of the top trends at Expo West as reported by the INSIDER team included CBD (everywhere!), manunka honey, tiger nuts, collagen, coconut and oats. Check out all the trends we saw in our podcasts (naturalproductsinsider.com/media-assets/podcasts), and on page 6, where we explore the food and beverage trends we saw in the expo hall. I love Expo West because it's like seeing the "prize" of fi nished products that comes after brands have done the hard work of ideation, development and manufacturing, which are the topics INSIDER covers. For instance, the brands with new launches at Expo West have already explored the topics we cover in this print issue, such as supply chain transparency (page 52), if the use of biotechnology is appropriate and how biotech should be disclosed to consumers (page 76), and how to mitigate risk against lawsuits (page 42). As brands drill down into the formulation, they may want to use a healthy replacement for trans fat in their baked goods (page 20), offer a caffeine- free energizing product (page 26), or perhaps feature hot ingredients such as curcumin (page 8), magnesium (page 68) or coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10, page 64). I'm looking forward to seeing how ingredient and solutions providers are continuing to help healthy CPG brands innovate at SupplySide East, April 9 and 10, in Secaucus, New Jersey.
