Even simple changes to diet and exercise can benefit the long-term health of an individual with diabetes. Martha Funnell, an assistant research scientist in the department of medical education at the Michigan Diabetes Research and Training Center, recommends her patients follow an exercise routine. "Based on research, the most helpful thing for people to do is to lose some weight, and this is generally 5 percent to 10 percent of body weight," Funnell said. "Really, that 5 percent to 10 percent can have a significant impact and help increase metabolism." Funnell said general recommendations for diet and exercise come from the Diabetes Association and the American Hear t Association (AHA). A healthy diet and 30 minutes of exercise a day, five days a week is advised. Jacob Teitelbaum, M.D., medical director of the Fibromyalgia and Fatigue Centers and author of "Beat Sugar Addiction NOW! " said walking is an effective exercise for diabetes patients. "Do your walks outside in the sunshine, as sunshine makes vitamin D, and low vitamin D is associated with a dramatically increased risk of diabetes," he said. Tei telbaum advises pat ients to stay away from sugars when splurging. He suggested a healthy splurge is sugar-free dark chocolate. Though it is not low in calories and should be consumed in moderation, it is a healthy option when craving sweets. Addi t ional ly, brewers yeast at 9g/d lowered blood sugar by 40 percent in a recent study (J Trace Elem Med Biol. 2011 Jul;25(3):149- 53.), Teitelbaum noted. He suggests adding it to a vitamin powder to make a "life healing" daily smoothie. Another concern that is often overlooked by patients with diabetes is testosterone levels, Teitelbaum said. "In men, a low or low-normal testosterone worsens diabetes while raising high blood pressure, weight and fat around the abdomen called a 'spare tire,'" he said. "This is called metabolic syndrome and of ten goes away with bio- identical testosterone." With women, too high testosterone levels can cause diabetes and need to be lowered, he added. Staying healthy by following diet and exercise plans while also monitoring blood sugar and testosterone levels are important considerations for those with or at risk for diabetes. Taking proper care of oneself when sick is also a critical concern, Funnell said. "Something often overlooked is how you take care of yourself when you are sick with the flu or another virus," she said. "It is important to continue medication, even if you can't eat, and to check blood sugar levels often. What starts with the flu can often elevate to something much worse if you don't take proper care of yourself."
