t a m i 20 INSIDER September/October 2017 of insulin resistance, and serum levels of glucose, insulin, leptin, total cholesterol, triglycerides, uric acid and malondialdehyde), and in oxidative stress and infl ammation biomarkers. 18 Researchers concluded, "Curcumin may potentially be useful in the treatment of [metabolic syndrome] through its ability to modulate oxidation stress status and infl ammation cascades." Heart Health Curcumin has been linked to benefi ts related to several areas of heart health including atherosclerosis, cardiac hypertrophy, hypertension and ischemia/ reperfusion, and it also benefi ts the heart via its effects on the infl ammatory response and on oxidative stress. 19 In patients diagnosed with coronary artery disease, supplementation with curcumin (as Curcumin C3 Complex [500 mg four times a day]) for eight weeks showed signifi cant decrease in serum levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL)-cholesterol, very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL)- cholesterol and triglycerides. 20 Supplementation with 1,000 mg curcumin (as CurcuWin Curcumin, from OmniActive) increased fl ow mediated dilation (a measure of cardiovascular health), which correlates to a reduction in cardiovascular risk by up to 50 percent. 2 1 Additional Benefi ts Curcumin's ability to support immune health has supported its ties to anti- cancer benefi ts. Majeed pointed to a review article published in the journal Current Pharmaceutical Design in 2017 highlighting the role of microRNAs (MiRNAs) in causing lung cancer and the ability of curcumin to regulate them. 22 MiRNAs are non-coding RNA (ribonucleic acid) molecules that play key roles in the regulation of gene expression. Results of a randomized trial published in 2016 demonstrated adjunctive therapy with curcuminoids supplementation at 500 mg/d (Curcmin C3 Complex, from Sabinsa) in subjects diagnosed with peptic ulcer who were receiving standard helicobacter pylori eradication therapy showed a greater improvement in symptoms related to peptic ulcer with no side effects. 23 Joint Health/Infl ammation Though the positive health effects of curcumin continue to expand, its greatest areas of recognition relate to its anti- infl ammatory effects and, thus, its benefi ts to joints. Referring to joint health, Rick Antoff, CEO, Novel Ingredient Services, said, "That's creativity analysis labeling v v v v i i t t a a a m m m i i i i n n n s s calculations conceptualiztion design minerals compliance data storage testing reformulation research regulations THERE'S A LOT THAT GOES INTO SUPPLEMENT CREATION.
