naturalproductsinsider . com 29 Whey and casein are the two major proteins found in milk. Casein is a slow-acting protein source, releasing its amino acids over a longer period. This has positioned casein as a protein for longer recovery regimens, such as overnight recovery. 9 Micellar is "native" casein produced in a non-denaturing process. While the debate rages on concerning the differences between whey and casein and the native or other versions of each, a combination of fast and slow proteins is a growing strategy. Ingredia's PRODIET ® fl uid is one such combination ingredient, offering 92 percent micellar casein and 8 percent native whey. Beyond dairy, a popular animal source of protein is chicken. According to International Dehydrated Foods (IDF), it takes fewer grams of its CHiKPRO™ chicken protein isolate powder to supply the essential amino acid levels than with casein, whey and plant proteins. As the various forms of protein tussle over which is better for muscle recovery and development, an innovative approach to improving protein absorption and effi cacy is via use of an amylopectin- chromium complex (as Velositol™, from Nutrition 21) which, when paired with whey protein ingestion, has been shown to increase MPS following resistance exercise more than whey alone. 10 The key to this benefi t is the effect of chromium on insulin—in the presence of amino acids, insulin stimulates MPS. As important as MPS is for post-exercise muscle development, called "gains" by bodybuilders, blocking muscle protein breakdown (MPB) is an essential part of the equation. The amino acids alanine and glutamine (as Sustamine™, from Kyowa Hakko) are known for impacts on energy, fatigue and hydration, but a 2015 study laid out a case for Sustamine as a recovery ingredient to inhibit MPB. 11 In the animal study, rats were given either whey protein or Sustamine following exercise. Sustamine immediately altered activation of signaling proteins responsible for MPB, while whey protein boosted activation of mTOR signaling known to trigger MPS. Increasing muscle energy stores, inhibiting muscle breakdown and promoting MPS are not the only muscle recovery goals. The consequence of exercise on muscles include increased oxidative stress and infl ammation. Infl ammation due to wear and tear of the muscle fi bers from strenuous exercise trigger delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) that prolongs recovery efforts.
