Natural eggshell membrane (NEM ® , from Stratum Nutrition) can reduce joint pain and stiffness while improving joint fl exibility in the general population. 29,30 In a healthy female population recovering from exercise-induced joint pain, NEM supplementation reduced cartilage turnover as well as stiffness and pain during recovery. 31 In other research, hydrolyzed, water-soluble egg membrane (as BiovaFlex ® , from Biova Ltd.) signifi cantly improved knee range of motion (ROM) and cervical lateral motion in moderately active women. 32 Another specialty joint health product is Terminalia chebula, which has antioxidant and anti-infl ammatory capabilities. T. chebula fruit (as Ayufl ex ® , from Natreon) improved joint discomfort from exercise/ activity, including knee soreness following resistance exercise. 33 Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) is a common joint function ingredient—research has shown MSM (as OptiMSM ® , from Bergstrom Nutrition ® ) protects articular cartilage by inhibiting infl ammatory cytokines and improves pain and function in OA 34,35 —but it also supports exercise recovery by boosting muscle repair 36 and limiting soreness, pain and muscle damage following intense training. 37,38 "A recently published study in the journal Nutrients verifi ed OptiMSM is a sulfur donor and confi rms the sulfur moiety from MSM is incorporated into proteins," said Tim Hammond, Bergstrom Nutrition. "Sulfur is a functionally important building block for protein synthesis and healthy collagen structures." 39 As with joint and infl ammation ingredients, there is a long list of immune- boosting compounds that could play well in sports recovery formulas, but only a few of these have been studied in athletes, who commonly suffer temporary immunosuppression following intense and endurance exercise. Beta-glucans from baker's yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) help address exercise-related immunosuppression. Supplementation with Wellmune ® , from Biothera led to a 37 percent reduction in post-marathon cold/fl u symptoms days and a 32 percent increase in immunoglobulin A (IgA), a sign of increased mucosal immunity. 40 Additional research found Wellmune taken by recreationally active men and women increased levels of immune cells including interferon gamma and various interleukins following strenuous exercise. 41 Probiotic Lactobacillus helveticus Lafti L10 (from Lallemand Health Solutions) reduced upper respiratory tract infection (URTI) duration in elite athletes, although there was no effect on severity and incidence. 42 Additional research found the same Lafti L10 modulated mucosal and humoral immunity in elite athletes. 43 Recovery ingredient possibilities are endless when considering energy restoration, muscle protection and development, post-exercise infl ammation and oxidative stress, and immune function. The key to continuing to identify specifi c benefi ts for sports nutrition will come from research conducted on athletes, especially post-exercise. Come on in. Grab a drink. And get down to business. The Opening Reception is the ingredient buyers and suppliers' fi rst opportunity at the show to meet and network with industry experts.
