Advertorial Leading manufacturers concerned with delivering the highest quality dietary ingredients and supplements can differentiate themselves in the global marketplace. USP offers a suite of tools and services to inform the manufacture of quality dietary ingredients and supplements. USP's Dietary Supplements Compendium (DSC) provides manufacturers with documentary standards for supplements and ingredients which help confirm identity, strength, quality and purity. USP also provides Reference Standards that are highly characterized materials for use with the United States Pharmacopeia–National Formulary and the Food Chemicals Codex. John Atwater, senior director of USP's Verification Programs, stated that, "Consumers are looking for ways to trust that what is on the label is inside the bottle." Atwater notes that conformance with USP quality specifications helps ensure that ingredients, products or contaminants with known safety concerns don't reach consumers. Independent verification services address consistent adherence to science-based standards USP applies the same rigor to its verification services as it does to its quality standards for medicines and foods. USP has designed two independent verification programs—one for dietary ingredients and the other for dietary supplements. Each program provides quality assurances to differentiate manufacturers' products in a competitive market. Manufacturers seeking to ensure the quality of raw materials and products may undergo USP's ongoing third-party quality evaluation program to facilitate compliance with GMP, verify that their ingredients and/or products conform to appropriate specifications and meet acceptable limits for impurities and contaminants. In turn, they reduce the risk of products being of inconsistent and substandard quality, and strengthen confidence that GMP and science-based quality standards are being met. The ingredient verification program also helps to reduce the burden on suppliers to qualify that raw material standards are being met to satisfy supplement manufacturers' requirements. During these verification programs, participating manufacturers undergo a GMP audit, documentation review of manufacturing processes, and testing that will identify and prioritize any corrective findings. Over 750 million bottles of dietary supplements have been sold to date with the USP Verified Mark. Quality systems GMP audit The USP GMP audit may be undertaken as an annual stand- alone service for dietary ingredient or dietary supplement manufacturing facilities. USP's dietary supplement standards incorporate FDA's GMP requirements as well as additional components to promote quality manufacturing. Manufacturers whose ingredients or products successfully undergo USP's rigorous testing and auditing are awarded separate, distinctive marks designed specifically for either ingredient manufacturers or supplement manufacturers. These marks provide purchasers the trust that these ingredients or products have been verified to adhere to the program's standards. About USP USP is an independent non-profit organization that collaborates with the world's top health and science experts to develop quality standards that help set the bar for manufacturing and distributing safe medicines, supplements and food around the globe. Two billion people worldwide have access to quality medicines, dietary supplements and food as a result of USP's standards, advocacy and education.
